Calf Country!

The calves on Windyridge don’t like to let a little thing like frigid temperatures get them down! This pretty little heifer was born three days before the temperature dropped into the single digits. When she gets cold, she just finds the nearest hay bale, and snuggles herself into a nice warm bed of hay. She has been adding a nice fur coat, too.

Here is a calf that was born late in the fall, so she had plenty of time to put on her thick winter coat. This next knucklehead thought ice skating on the pond looked fun. Fortunately, he doesn’t weigh much and did not fall through.

These last two photos are animals from stories found in The View from Windyridge, Book One in the Jillian MacSweeney Mystery Series. This black steer walking down the road, is the naughty steer that I named El Diablo, for hopping fences and munching where he should not be munching. I really hated that steer…he has since met his fate as “beef on the hoof.”

Finally, one of my favorite stories from Windyridge, is a baby bull who was born in a terrible storm and nearly froze to death. I don’t usually name calves, but this little survivor earned the name Jack Frost. Anna watched over him while he thawed.
